The project began with a simple idea. Challenge is part of every life, regardless of background, position or success.
We wanted to hear from people with completely different backgrounds and experiences, which is why Resilience brings together twelve prominent Scots from different walks of life.
The book shares honest accounts from individuals who have faced challenge, uncertainty and hardship, and found a way forward.
These are not perfect journeys. They are real. They show moments where things did not go to plan, where setbacks were unavoidable and where decisions had to be made in difficult circumstances. Because that is where resilience is built.
Our hope is that by sharing these stories, others will recognise that success is built over time. That it inevitably includes setbacks as well as progress. And that through understanding this, people feel more equipped to keep going when things become difficult.
At Kanzen for Life, our work is about building better lives and empowering communities. We believe resilience is developed through experience, opportunity, connection and having people around you when challenges arise.
Four perspectives from the twelve Scots whose stories sit at the heart of the book.

I slightly resent the suggestion that if things have gone badly for you, your life’s over. But you don’t use up your shots. I think resilience is a muscle.

To be resilient, you have to experience something bad. Resilience is knowing that these things will pass and you will be better a person and stronger for it.

During my career, I lost a lot more games than I won. You’re not going to win every game, so you have to be able to park the losses and move on. But it’s learning from defeat that helps you bounce back and shine through when it comes to big moments like the Olympic Games.

Very few hardships or challenges are unique, others will have the experience and hopefully solutions – seek them out and learn.

All proceeds from Resilience are reinvested into Kanzen for Life, helping us continue our work to build better lives and empower communities.
